Equipoise refers to the idea of balance; a state of equilibrium.
I apply it to aspects contributing towards the classroom climate:
The ebb and flow of the teaching and learning process;
the group's underlying social alliances;
as well as the emotional forces which destabilise individual pupils and have a disproportionate impact on the class and the teacher.
Significantly, the concept of equipoise is primarily applied to the adult who has the responsibility of being in charge.

Instead of a fixation on authoritarian control, I place an emphasis on how the teacher might skilfully create, influence and manage conditions so all benefit. I do not advocate a liberal alternative, but rather authoritative leadership that balances positive 'control' and 'care'.
Equipoise moves beyond telling you what to do.
My PhD research has confirmed that classroom groups are dynamic;
behaviour within each group is adaptive – it
cannot be reduced to a formula or
'solved' by an external expert.
The key is to empower you as you work with your pupils
