I began my career in education working with primary children in play-centres in Tower Hamlets, east London. I proceeded to work with young people in Papua New Guinea, Romania, and the United States. Over 30 years I have gained wide, varied experience as:
- A fully qualified teacher in UK secondary schools for 20 years (PE / RE / Humanities)
- A Head of Department for 14 years
- An Advanced Skills Teacher (AST) for 5 years
- A Behaviour Consultant for the Local Authority for 2 years
- The Lead Teacher for Behaviour in my own school for 4 years (my role, which included setting up systems and intervention with the most disruptive pupils, was documented in a Masters' degree in 2006).
I have completed 6 years of PhD action research studying the complex dynamics shaping classroom climates. As a practitioner-researcher I studied relationships and performance with 16 different groups I taught. Disseminating findings in the final research cycle, I used aspects of my methodology to assist 6 colleagues with classes causing them concern: a trainee, 4 NQTs and an established teacher. The principles I advocate apply to both secondary and primary classrooms.
I have recently worked as a part-time university lecturer examining educational policy. My diverse experience incorporates many roles in education, from serving as a supply teacher to addressing audiences at national and regional educational events.
